4 Tips to Avoid Roofing Scams in Fort Collins

When it comes to scams, the roofing industry is wrought with fly-by-night companies. If you’re a homeowner in Fort Collins, you’ve probably even been approached by companies offering discounts or “deals” that seem too good to pass up.

Here are 4 tips to help you avoid falling prey to one of the many roofing scams in Fort Collins.

Get Multiple Estimates. As with most home remodeling or construction trades, it’s important to understand the average cost of a project. In getting at least 3 estimates, you’re able to compare costs and determine whether a proposed cost is a good deal, or if it’s just smoke and mirrors.

Ask for Everything in Writing. A handshake and verbal agreement is one of the most common roofing scams in Fort Collins homeowners face. Without having the agreement in writing, the terms of your roofing project are all here-say. Additionally, never sign a contract with any blanks, this is just asking for problems. A contract with blank line items is no different than signing over a blank check. This also includes finding and applying for any permits required by your county. Your contract with any roofing contractor in Fort Collins should spell out these details so that there’s absolutely no question with regard to who is responsible for what.

Get at least 3 references. Any reputable roofer should be able to provide at least 3 references. If not, run. Even if the roofing contractor is able to provide references, you might want to try doing your own research. After all, in asking for references, it’s highly unlikely any contractor will give you references to anyone that had less than an amazing experience. To do your own research, try searching for the company or individuals name and the word “reviews.” This may pull up information on the company you might not have otherwise been able to find.

Check what kinds of insurance the roofing contractor carries. While most roofing contractors in Fort Collins work as carefully as possible, accidents do happen. It’s extremely important to understand how situations will be handled when the unexpected happens. The last thing you want is to be stuck with a bill to repair your home that the roofing contractor cannot cover. At a minimum, the roofing contractor should carry a policy that covers one-million dollars.
